If you have served in the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, Merchant Navy in support of military operations, or as a Reservist, please let your GP practice know.
A veteran is anyone who has served at least one day in the UK Armed Forces, whether as a Regular or Reservist.
Recording your veteran status on your medical record helps us understand your health needs and ensure you can access the support and services available to you.
Being identified as a veteran can help you access:
- Specialist NHS services for veterans
- Mental health support tailored to former service personnel
- Support for service-related injuries and conditions
- Information about local and national veterans' organisations
- Priority NHS treatment for conditions related to your military service, subject to clinical need
If you have not already done so, please contact your GP practice and ask for your veteran status to be added to your medical record.
Op COURAGE: The Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service
Op COURAGE is an NHS service providing specialist mental health support for veterans, service leavers and reservists.
The service can help with:
- Anxiety and depression
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Alcohol or substance misuse
- Adjustment to civilian life
- Complex mental health needs
You can self-refer or ask your GP to refer you.
Veterans Trauma Network
The Veterans Trauma Network provides specialist care for veterans who have physical injuries related to their time in the Armed Forces.
Your GP can help you access the most appropriate service if you have ongoing health problems linked to your military service.
Veterans Gateway
Veterans Gateway is the first point of contact for veterans and their families seeking support.
They can provide advice on:
- Housing
- Employment
- Finances
- Mental health and wellbeing
- Physical health
- Family support
- Benefits and pensions
