Research at Central and West Warrington PCN
We are proud to be a research-active PCN.
Our practices work with NHS research organisations to help patients access opportunities to take part in health and care research.
Many of the treatments, medicines and services used by the NHS today only exist because patients volunteered to take part in research.
By taking part in research, you can help improve healthcare for future generations and, in some cases, gain access to new approaches, treatments or support.
Health research helps us find better ways to:
- Prevent illness
- Diagnose conditions earlier
- Improve treatments
- Manage long-term conditions
- Improve mental health support
- Improve NHS services
Research is not just about testing medicines. It can involve questionnaires, interviews, health checks, new ways of delivering care, lifestyle programmes and many other types of studies.
Yes.
Research is open to people of all ages and backgrounds. Some studies are looking for people with specific health conditions, while others need healthy volunteers.
You may be eligible even if you do not currently have a medical condition.
Why take part?
People choose to take part in research for many different reasons:
- To help improve healthcare for others
- To contribute to future NHS treatments and services
- To learn more about their own health condition
- To support research into conditions affecting family members
- To give something back to the NHS
Many people find it rewarding to know they are helping improve care for future patients.
All NHS research studies must go through strict approval processes before patients can take part.
If you are invited to a study, you will receive information explaining:
- What the study involves
- Any potential risks or benefits
- How your information will be used
- Your right to withdraw at any time
Taking part is always your choice and your usual care will not be affected if you decide not to participate.
Register your interest
The easiest way to find research opportunities is through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) "Be Part of Research" service.
You can register your interests and be matched to studies that may be suitable for you. Studies may take place in GP practices, hospitals, community settings or even from home.

Research carried out in GP practices helps improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of conditions affecting local people every day.
From time to time, our practices may be involved in research studies.
If a study may be suitable for you, we may contact you with information about the opportunity. You can then decide whether you would like to find out more.
Being contacted does not mean you have to take part.
Will taking part affect my normal NHS care?
No. Your usual care will continue whether or not you choose to participate.
Do I have to take part if I am invited?
No. Participation is entirely voluntary.
Can I change my mind?
Yes. You can withdraw from most studies at any time.
Will I be paid?
Some studies reimburse travel expenses or provide compensation for your time. Details will always be explained before you decide whether to take part.
